Chandigarh, 25 September 2025 : A delegation of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Punjab, led by the newly elected Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) President Gauravveer Sohal, met the Honourable Governor of Punjab, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, on Wednesday. The delegation submitted a memorandum demanding the construction of an underpass to ease connectivity between the North and South Campus of Panjab University.
The memorandum highlighted that thousands of students, teachers, and staff members face daily inconvenience in commuting between the two parts of the university. Currently, the North and South Campus are divided by a busy road, and the lack of a direct and safe passage poses safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists. The delegation stressed that the construction of an underpass is not only a matter of convenience but also of safety, as students are often exposed to traffic hazards while crossing the road.
ABVP leaders explained that Panjab University is among the premier higher education institutions of the country, attracting students from across India and abroad. They pointed out that a world-class institution must also ensure world-class infrastructure for its academic community. According to the delegation, the underpass would serve as a long-term solution to the mobility issues faced by the campus community, while also contributing to a more cohesive and integrated university environment.
PUCSC President Gauravveer Sohal, representing the student body, underscored that the demand for an underpass has been raised repeatedly by successive batches of students, but the issue has remained unresolved. He urged that immediate attention be given to this matter to prevent further delays. Sohal emphasized that the student community looks forward to timely action by the administration in collaboration with the state authorities.
The Honourable Governor of Punjab, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, gave a patient hearing to the delegation. He acknowledged the concerns raised by the students and assured them that the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities for appropriate action.
Following the meeting, ABVP leaders along with ABVP North Zone Organising Secretary Shri Gaurav Attri, Punjab State Organising Secretary Shri Shamsher Singh Chauhan, National Secretary Shri Aditya Takiar, Punjab State Secretary Shri Manmeet Sohal, ABVP Panjab University President Shri Parvindra Singh Negi, DES SCA Joint Secretary, Shri Rohit Negta were especially present there.
