CHENNAI: Marking a landmark achievement for Indian solar racing, Team AgniRath from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras secured third place overall at the prestigious Sasol Solar Challenge 2026 held in South Africa.
The student team successfully drove their solar-powered vehicle, Aagneya, across a demanding 1,192.6 kilometres over eight days, navigating challenging terrains and unpredictable weather conditions. With this podium finish, Team AgniRath became the first Indian team to not only participate in the Sasol Solar Challenge but also bring home a trophy.
A Test of Sustainable Engineering
The Sasol Solar Challenge is a biennial international competition designed as the ultimate test of technology and innovation. Teams from across the globe conceptualize, design, and build solar-powered vehicles to race across South Africa, travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town via Jeffreys Bay.
“This podium finish is a celebration of student innovation, engineering excellence, teamwork and the relentless pursuit of sustainable mobility,” IIT Madras stated on Wednesday.
The institute officially congratulated the students, posting: “Historic finish for Team AgniRath! Congratulations to Team AgniRath for putting IIT Madras and India on the global solar racing map.”
The Journey of Team AgniRath and Aagneya
Founded in 2021 by six passionate students, Team AgniRath has rapidly grown into a multidisciplinary collective of over 45 undergraduate engineers. The team handles every aspect of vehicle development in-house, working across aerodynamics, electrical systems, battery technology, telemetry, vehicle dynamics, manufacturing, and business operations.
Aagneya, the team’s second-generation solar race car, was designed, engineered, and built entirely by its student members.
“As one of the largest solar racing vehicles manufactured by a student team in India, Aagneya embodies thousands of hours of research, craftsmanship, and perseverance,” the team shared. “Through Aagneya, we aim to push the boundaries of solar mobility and demonstrate the potential of sustainable transportation on the global stage.”
For the students of IIT Madras, the demanding race served as a unique platform to validate cutting-edge clean energy technologies.
“For us, racing is more than a competition. It is an opportunity to transform ideas into reality, apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems, and collaborate as a team to overcome engineering challenges,” Team AgniRath noted. “By competing internationally, we showcase India’s engineering capabilities while inspiring students, researchers, and industry leaders to embrace renewable energy and sustainable transportation solutions.”
