CHANDIGARH: Emphasizing practical environmental action, the Department of Botany at DAV College, Sector 10, successfully organized a three-day “Seed Ball for Sustainable Campus” activity from August 24 to August 26.
Conducted under the inspiring theme “Small Seed Balls, Big Green Future,” the initiative aimed to actively promote environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation, the propagation of native plant species, and local climate action.
The Green Pledge and Orientation
The programme commenced with a detailed orientation session focusing on the ecological importance of seed balls, native plants, biodiversity, and sustainable practices. This was immediately followed by a ‘Green Pledge’ taken by both students and faculty members.
Officiating Principal Dr. Mona Narang inaugurated the event, utilizing the platform to encourage students to adopt more sustainable lifestyles and to actively conserve the seeds of native trees and plants.
“Protecting indigenous species is vital for preserving our local biodiversity and creating a greener, more sustainable future for the upcoming generations,” Dr. Narang emphasized.
Practical Action and Eco-Friendly Packaging
Following the orientation, students actively collected native seeds and prepared the seed balls using a mixture of clay, manure, and other natural materials. To maximize public engagement, an awareness rally featuring creative slogans and posters was also held on campus.
Highlighting a commitment to zero-waste, the seed balls—containing both vegetable and flower seeds—were thoughtfully wrapped in eco-friendly packaging made from Bargad (Banyan) and Kanak Champa leaves before being distributed to faculty members. Furthermore, seed balls containing native trees were strategically dispersed at various locations across the city to aid in urban reforestation.
The three-day initiative saw enthusiastic participation from approximately 100 students and 50 faculty members. By seamlessly combining environmental education with direct practical action, the event successfully reinforced DAV College’s ongoing commitment to institutional sustainability and a greener future.
