Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global life, China is now battling a surge in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus affecting individuals of all ages, with vulnerable groups like children and older adults being most impacted.
Current Situation in China
Multiple reports from media outlets and social media platforms indicate a rapid spread of HMPV across the country. Hospitals and crematoriums are reportedly overwhelmed, with children’s hospitals particularly strained due to rising cases of pneumonia and “white lung.”
Videos circulating online show overcrowded hospitals, with respiratory illnesses attributed to a combination of viruses, including:
- Influenza A
- Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae
- COVID-19
Data from the Chinese CDC in late December revealed a rising positive rate of HMPV cases among children under 14, as reported by China’s state broadcaster CCTV. The situation has sparked concern over a notable increase in sudden deaths among individuals aged 40 to 80.
What Is HMPV?
Human Metapneumovirus, discovered in 2001, is a member of the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Despite its recent identification, serological studies suggest that HMPV has been infecting humans for over 60 years and is distributed worldwide.
HMPV primarily spreads through respiratory droplets, direct contact, or touching contaminated objects. The virus has an incubation period of three to five days, and common symptoms include:
- Cough
- Fever
- Nasal congestion
- Shortness of breath
Preventive Measures and Warnings
Dr. Li Tongzeng, a leading physician at Beijing You’an Hospital, recommends wearing masks, frequent hand washing, and boosting immunity as primary preventive strategies. However, experts caution against the misuse of antiviral drugs due to the absence of a specific vaccine or antiviral treatment for HMPV.
In an interview with the National Business Daily, a respiratory specialist in Shanghai highlighted that HMPV symptoms often resemble those of the common cold, emphasizing the importance of accurate diagnosis.
Global Context
HMPV cases have been previously reported in countries like the Netherlands, Britain, Finland, Australia, Canada, and the US. Its emergence as a significant public health concern highlights the need for increased surveillance and awareness.
