Ministry of Ayush Announces “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” as Theme for International Day of Yoga 2026

As India rapidly expands its national highway network, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is sharpening its focus on safety alongside speed and connectivity. Moving beyond the traditional approach of wider roads, the ministry is integrating global-standard safety systems to protect both highway workers and road users, with Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) emerging as a key innovation.

Highway construction and maintenance zones remain among the most hazardous stretches, where workers operate in close proximity to fast-moving traffic. To address these risks, MoRTH has encouraged concessionaires to adopt advanced safety measures. In a notable step, one such operator managing nine highway projects across Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat—covering 681 km—has deployed TMAs equipped with integrated wig-wag warning systems, marking a significant shift towards proactive safety management.

TMAs are impact-absorbing devices designed to reduce the force of collisions. By dissipating kinetic energy during crashes, they act as a protective barrier for maintenance crews and significantly lower the risk of severe injuries for vehicle occupants. These systems essentially function as a shield in high-risk work zones, mitigating the impact of accidents.

Adding another layer of protection, the TMAs are fitted with high-intensity wig-wag lights that flash in directional patterns, alerting drivers well in advance. This feature proves particularly effective on high-speed corridors and during night-time or low-visibility conditions such as fog, helping prevent accidents before they occur.

Across the nine projects, a total of 33 TMAs and 15 towable variants have been deployed. All units meet globally recognised safety benchmarks, including MASH Test Level-3 and NCHRP 350 Test Level-3 standards, and are capable of withstanding impacts at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

The initiative reflects a broader transformation in India’s infrastructure philosophy—where development is not measured solely by the pace of construction, but by the emphasis on safety and sustainability. With such measures taking root, India’s highways are steadily evolving into safer corridors, ensuring that progress does not come at the cost of human lives.
