Indian Railways has significantly strengthened its telecom and digital infrastructure during 2025-26, rolling out a range of AI-driven and automated solutions aimed at enhancing passenger safety, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience.
A major development is the expansion of real-time passenger information systems, with automatic train announcements now operational at 1,405 railway stations. These systems are integrated with the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), ensuring timely and accurate updates through electronic display boards, coach guidance systems, and public address networks.
In a significant push towards safety, AI-enabled video surveillance systems have been deployed across 1,874 stations. Equipped with advanced analytics, these systems can detect suspicious activities such as intrusion and loitering, while facial recognition technology enables real-time monitoring and identification.
Indian Railways has also strengthened its communication backbone by deploying Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) technology at 1,396 stations. This high-capacity network supports critical operations including reservation systems, freight management, and supervisory control systems, while also enabling centralized access to surveillance data and better coordination among stations.
To tackle communication challenges in difficult terrains, tunnel communication systems are being installed in key projects such as the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link. These systems ensure uninterrupted radio connectivity between personnel inside tunnels and control centres, thereby enhancing safety and operational coordination.
According to the Ministry of Railways, these initiatives are part of Indian Railways’ broader push towards a modern, technology-driven ecosystem aligned with the Digital India vision. The integration of artificial intelligence, advanced communication networks, and passenger-centric services is expected to significantly improve efficiency, safety, and convenience across the national rail network.
