Chandigarh— The Department of Dietetics and Hospital Administration, PGIMER, Chandigarh, organised a comprehensive workshop to mark Indian Dietetics Day 2026, focusing on the theme “Control of Obesity for Healthier India – An Action Call from Nutrition Science Professionals.” The programme aimed to create awareness about the rising burden of obesity and to equip participants with evidence-based strategies for effective weight management.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Sanjay Jain, Dean Research, PGIMER, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasised that moderation in diet is the key to long-term adherence and maintaining a healthy body. Prof. Vipin Koushal, Medical Superintendent and Head, Department of Hospital Administration, PGIMER, graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and highlighted the importance of adopting a ‘Vocal for Local’ approach in food choices to promote health and sustainability. Prof. Ashok Kumar, AMS, Department of Hospital Administration, was also present among the dignitaries.

Aligned with the theme, Dr. Nancy Sahni, Chief Dietician and Head, Department of Dietetics, along with her team including Mr. B.N. Behra, Senior Dietician, led the initiative to spread awareness among faculty members, allied health professionals and the general public about lifestyle modifications required to prevent and reverse obesity. In her keynote address, Dr. Sahni highlighted behavioural dietary changes, mindful eating aligned with circadian rhythms, and practical dietary models that support long-term weight management.

Adding clinical perspectives, Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Professor and Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, and Dr. Sanjay Bhadada, Professor and Head, Department of Endocrinology, delivered expert lectures on surgical options for obesity management, the role of lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapy, and the growing link between obesity and non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

An engaging skit presented by dietetics interns creatively conveyed the message of the theme, reinforcing the importance of healthy living. The workshop witnessed the participation of around 250 delegates, making it a significant platform for promoting nutritional awareness and preventive healthcare.
