Chandigarh, June 25, 2025 – Marking the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the Emergency in 1975, SHoDH Panjab University in collaboration with ABVP Chandigarh organized a solemn and dignified felicitation ceremony to honour the courageous individuals who resisted the authoritarian regime and upheld democratic values during one of the darkest chapters in Indian history.
Adv. Satyapal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India and former MP from Chandigarh, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he recounted the gross misuse of power during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure, particularly around the time of the election verdict that led to the imposition of Emergency. He highlighted the inhumane treatment and torture meted out to those who dared to oppose the regime and lauded the indomitable spirit of the “Emergency Heroes.”
Prof. Dr. Nagesh Thakur, Former National President of ABVP and Guest of Honour, emphasized the pivotal role of students and youth in resisting the Emergency. “Democracy is the soul of India,” he stated, while recalling the brutal oppression faced by dissenting voices during that time.
Shri Deshraj Tandon, a respected social worker and Special Guest at the event, delivered an emotional reflection on the hardships endured during the Emergency and the unyielding determination of those who stood against it.
Speakers throughout the ceremony stressed the importance of remembering the Emergency to safeguard democracy for future generations. The event served not just as a tribute, but also as a call to remain vigilant in defending constitutional values.
