CHANDIGARH: A prominent press conference was organized today at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chandigarh State Office, ‘Kamalam’ in Sector-33, to discuss the historic ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ (Women’s Reservation Bill). The briefing was jointly addressed by Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and senior BJP Haryana leader Kiran Choudhry.
During the conference, Union Minister Sanjay Seth launched a scathing attack on the opposition. He stated that while responsible conduct is expected in a democracy, the opposition resorted to “mere political rhetoric instead of meaningful debate” on a bill that guarantees 33% legislative reservation for women. Seth accused the Congress and its allies of exposing their “double standards,” claiming they opposed the bill due to narrow political interests and a fear of losing dynastic control, all while falsely claiming to champion women’s empowerment.
Seth further emphasized the legislative mechanics, noting that the bill is a Constitutional Amendment requiring a two-thirds majority and highlighted the necessity of delimitation based on population growth to ensure effective representation. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, noting that initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Ujjwala Yojana, and Swachh Bharat have brought transformative, ground-level changes for women nationwide.
Senior BJP Haryana leader Kiran Choudhry echoed these sentiments, invoking the progressive vision of India’s Constitution makers, especially Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who ensured equal political rights for women from the nation’s inception. However, she criticized the Congress for failing to implement this equality in true spirit over the last 70 years. Pointing specifically to 2010, Choudhry noted that despite holding a full majority, the Congress failed to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, exposing a lack of political will and treating women merely as a vote bank.
Choudhry lauded PM Modi’s grassroots welfare schemes—including the Jan Dhan Yojana and Ayushman Bharat—stating they reflect genuine empowerment. “Today, rural girls even demand toilets in homes before marriage—this reflects true empowerment,” she remarked. She termed the opposition’s recent technical delays in Parliament regarding the bill as “a dark chapter in history.”
The event saw prominent attendance from local party leadership, including State President Jatinder Pal Malhotra, Mahila Morcha President Heera Negi, State Vice President Indira Singh, State Secretary Meenakshi Thakur, Sonia Duggal, Deputy Mayor Suman Sharma, and District President Rekha Sood.
The leaders concluded the conference by expressing confidence that the women of India will respond democratically, reaffirming the BJP’s unwavering commitment to securing the rightful 33% representation for the nation’s daughters.
