THE HAGUE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that the historic 11th Century Chola Copper Plates, currently preserved in the Netherlands, will soon be repatriated to India.
Calling the development a “joyous moment for every Indian,” PM Modi revealed that the invaluable artifacts are set to return following successful discussions held in the presence of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share the news, the Prime Minister expressed deep pride in the legacy, culture, and maritime prowess of the Chola dynasty.
The Historical Significance of the Plates The artifacts consist of 21 large plates and three smaller ones, featuring inscriptions primarily written in Tamil. According to PM Modi, the plates hold immense historical value as they relate to Rajendra Chola I formalizing an oral commitment originally made by his father, the great Rajaraja I.
The plates have been preserved at Leiden University since the mid-19th century. During his announcement, the Prime Minister extended his sincere gratitude to the Netherlands government and the university for safeguarding India’s heritage.
Deepening Bilateral Ties The cultural announcement comes amidst a broader diplomatic agenda. Earlier in the day, PM Modi met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at the Royal Palace Huis ten Bosch in The Hague.
Following the royal meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted that India and the Netherlands share a mutual belief in building a “future-ready planet.” The two sides held productive discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including technology, innovation, sustainable growth, commerce, and water management.
This trip marks PM Modi’s second official visit to the Netherlands, underscoring a deepening strategic partnership and a rapidly expanding relationship between India and the European nation in trade, clean energy, and cultural engagement.
