LAUSANNE: India has formally entered the global race alongside six other nations to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Tuesday.
The seven countries currently engaged in preliminary discussions with the IOC are India, Germany, Qatar, Hungary, Turkey, South Africa, and South Korea.
Timeline for Selection and Host Process
According to the IOC, a curated shortlist will be drawn up in March next year, allowing selected candidate nations to advance into a formal strategic dialogue phase.
The bidding roadmap outlined by the IOC includes:
-
October 31 Deadline: The final date for any additional interested nations to officially submit expressions of interest, though new bids remain unlikely given the short window.
-
March 2027: Shortlist established for the strategic dialogue phase.
-
2028: Preferred host nations to be formally named by the IOC Executive Board.
-
Mid-2029: Final decision and formal award of the 2036 host city.
The race comes as part of the Olympic movement’s long-term calendar, with Los Angeles set to host the 2028 Summer Games and Brisbane, Australia, scheduled to stage the event four years later in 2032.
