Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough in the treatment of high blood pressure, PGIMER Chandigarh has successfully performed its first Renal Denervation (RDN) procedure. The advanced procedure was carried out by Dr. Saurabh Mehrotra, Professor, Advanced Cardiology Centre, under the supervision of Dr. Yash Paul Sharma, Professor & Head, Department of Cardiology, at the Advanced Cardiac Centre, PGIMER.
The procedure was performed on a 48-year-old patient suffering from long-standing uncontrolled hypertension. Despite being on multiple antihypertensive medications and undergoing close medical observation for nearly two weeks, the patient’s blood pressure remained persistently high, prompting the medical team to consider an alternative intervention.
Given the patient’s young age and poor response to optimal medical therapy, the cardiology team decided to proceed with renal denervation, a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure that targets overactive nerves around the renal arteries—key contributors to resistant hypertension.
Also known as the Symplicity™ Blood Pressure Procedure, renal denervation uses controlled radiofrequency energy to disrupt the nerve signals responsible for elevated blood pressure. The procedure does not involve any permanent implants and is considered safe and effective for selected patients.
The procedure was completed successfully without any complications. The patient is currently stable and showing improved blood pressure control under continued medical supervision.
Speaking on the achievement, Prof. Dr. Saurabh Mehrotra said that renal denervation offers new hope for patients whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite optimal medications, especially younger patients who are at high risk of long-term cardiovascular complications.
This milestone marks another step forward in PGIMER’s commitment to introducing cutting-edge cardiac therapies for patients in the region.
