NEW DELHI — In a major administrative milestone, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has successfully saturated more than 1,03,000 schools across the country under its special Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) drive. Launched in mission mode in September 2025, the massive exercise has already facilitated hassle-free Aadhaar biometric updates for nearly 1.2 crore schoolchildren aged 7 to 15 years directly within their school campuses.
The Technological Backbone: UDISE+ Integration The nationwide drive gained significant momentum following a seamless technological integration between UIDAI and the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) application, managed by the Department of School Education & Literacy.
This integration provided school authorities and administrators with real-time visibility of students’ biometric update statuses. By quickly identifying children who were due for their MBU, schools were able to organize highly targeted and efficient on-campus update camps.
Massive Scale and Execution To ensure the smooth implementation of this massive logistical exercise, UIDAI’s Regional and State Offices have been coordinating closely with State Education Departments, district administrations, schools, and various ecosystem partners.

Currently, at least 4,000 biometric machines are in active operation across the country to carry out the drive.

UIDAI is already in the process of augmenting this hardware fleet to further accelerate nationwide coverage.
Why the Update is Crucial The Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) emphasized that updating a child’s biometrics is not just a procedural formality, but a critical requirement for their future academic and social welfare access. Keeping these biometrics current ensures:

Seamless Authentication: Essential for easily availing benefits under various direct benefit transfer (DBT) government schemes and scholarships.

Academic Registrations: Mandatory for registering and appearing in major competitive and university entrance examinations, including NEET, JEE, and CUET.

To encourage maximum compliance and ease the financial burden on families, UIDAI has made biometric updates in Aadhaar completely free of cost for children in the 7–15 age group for one full year, effective from October 1, 2025.
For students who may miss the school-based camps, the UIDAI has clarified that children, accompanied by their parents or guardians, can still complete their mandatory biometric updates by visiting any designated Aadhaar enrolment centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra across the country.
