Anjaneya Tewari, Chandigarh : Ankit Bidhan, a PhD research scholar from Jind, Haryana, has secured the president’s post in the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections, marking a second consecutive victory for the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on the campus. Bidhan won with a decisive mandate, garnering 2,879 votes and defeating his closest rival, Aadil Brar of the AAP-backed Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), by a clear margin of 556 votes.
Following the announcement of the results, the ABVP organized a massive victory procession across the university campus. During the rally, the newly elected president was seen symbolically breaking brooms—the recognizable symbol of the Aam Aadmi Party. Supporters framed the aggressive gesture as a definitive statement against the AAP-backed opposition, projecting it as a signal of shifting political dynamics within the state.
A Claim on the “Gen Z” Mandate
The PUCSC election marks the first mass-level polling event held in India following the recent Jantar Mantar protests. ABVP supporters have widely projected the sweeping victory as a strong indicator of the current political leanings of Gen Z voters.
Addressing the large gathering of students following his win, Bidhan dedicated the mandate directly to the youth. He proudly declared the electoral outcome to be a “victory of the entire Gen Z,” suggesting that the student body has given its stamp of approval to the organization’s ideological direction.
Strategic Alliances and Groundwork
The organization’s historic back-to-back triumph on the Panjab University campus has been heavily credited to the strategic planning of Gaurav Attri. Widely regarded as the
driving force and strategic architect behind the campaign, Attri’s early campus engagement and sharp groundwork proved crucial.
A major factor in engineering Bidhan’s commanding win was the strategic coalition built under Attri’s direction. By successfully allying the ABVP with the Student Organisation of India (SOI), the campaign was able to consolidate a significant voting bloc, effectively cementing the student wing’s leadership role and stronghold on the university campus for another year.
