The Ministry of Ayush on Tuesday launched the 75-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga 2026 with the आयोजन of Yoga Mahotsav–2026 in Lonar, where nearly 5,000 participants created a record by performing Trikonasana simultaneously.
Organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), the event was held at Chhatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj Udyan and entered the Asia Book of Records for the largest gathering performing the yoga posture.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, described the event as a “strong beginning” to the countdown for IDY 2026, highlighting yoga’s growing global appeal. He said the record-setting performance reflected collective participation and shared wellness, calling it a symbol of a “global awakening towards holistic health and harmony.”
Emphasising the broader health benefits, Jadhav noted that yoga contributes to physical fitness, mental well-being, and emotional balance. He also highlighted the concept of Ayush Aahara, encouraging the use of traditional and natural foods such as millets, ragi, coconut oil, and medicinal spices to boost immunity.
Addressing the gathering, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Ayush, Monalisa Dash, described yoga as one of India’s most valuable contributions to the world, calling it a holistic way of life that fosters harmony between mind, body, and spirit.
The programme featured a live demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), led by MDNIY Director Prof. (Dr.) Kashinath Samagandi. Participants performed various yogasanas, pranayama, and meditation exercises, experiencing the comprehensive benefits of yoga.
Yoga Mahotsav–2026 also showcased key initiatives of the Ministry, including the “Yoga for Air Travel” protocol, “10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases,” and the Yoga 365 campaign promoting daily practice. A toll-free helpline offering 14 days of free guided yoga sessions was also highlighted.
The event formally marked the beginning of preparations for the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026, which has evolved into one of the world’s largest health and wellness movements with global participation.
The upcoming edition will focus on tackling non-communicable diseases, promoting geriatric health, and exploring the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence with yoga practices.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Ministry said it aims to expand yoga as a mass movement through Jan Bhagidari, encouraging wider public participation in the run-up to IDY 2026.
