DEHRADUN: Heavy rain lashed Dehradun on Thursday, bringing significant relief from the prevailing summer heat in the Uttarakhand capital. Weather conditions shifted dramatically across the city, with the Garhi Cantt area and several other localities recording substantial rainfall.
Widespread Showers Forecast for Uttarakhand
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rain activity accompanied by lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds across Uttarakhand over the coming days.
According to the IMD’s detailed forecast for the state:
-
Light to Moderate Rain: Expected at most places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, and Champawat districts, with similar conditions likely in the remaining districts.
-
High-Altitude Snowfall: Forecasted for regions at altitudes of 4,200 metres and above.
-
Severe Weather Warnings: Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places. The hill districts may also witness intense to very intense spells of rain.
Western Disturbance to Impact Northwest India
The wet weather is not limited to Uttarakhand. The meteorological department stated that Northwest India is likely to witness an extended wet spell driven by an active Western Disturbance.
“Under the influence of a Western Disturbance, a wet spell is likely over Northwest India until June 13. There is a possibility of thunderstorms with gusty winds (50-60 kmph) and hailstorms on June 11 and 12,” the IMD officially stated.
As this weather system moves and persists, rainfall and thunderstorm activity are projected to systematically expand across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan between June 10 and June 14. This regional shift is expected to significantly bring down maximum temperatures and provide widespread respite from the sweltering heat across the northern plains.
