Liechtenstein’s decision to amend its centuries-old succession laws and allow women to inherit the throne has been welcomed by Hindu leaders as a significant step toward gender equality. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, praised Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein for initiating the reform, describing it as “a meaningful step in the right direction.” However, he noted that such a change was long overdue and highlighted the prolonged struggle women have faced in achieving equal rights.

In a statement issued from Nevada, USA, Zed said that the reform was not merely a concession but a correction of a historical imbalance. He emphasized that daughters are equally capable of leading nations and fulfilling public responsibilities, adding that there should be no place in the 21st century for traditions that deny women equal opportunities to govern, inherit, or lead.

Calling on the world’s remaining monarchies to follow Liechtenstein’s example, Zed urged ruling houses to abolish discriminatory succession laws that continue to prevent women from ascending to thrones solely because of their gender. He described such restrictions as outdated and unjust.

Zed also appealed to Pope Leo XIV and other global religious leaders to speak out clearly and consistently in support of gender equality. He argued that religious institutions have a moral responsibility to challenge patriarchal structures, elevate the status of women, and help remove barriers that limit women’s opportunities and leadership roles.

Highlighting Hinduism’s longstanding respect for women, Zed cited the ancient Manusmriti, which states: “Where women are revered, there the gods are pleased; where they are not, no rite will yield any fruit.” He also noted that several hymns of the Rig Veda are traditionally attributed to women, while the goddess Aditi, often referred to as the “mother of the gods,” occupies a prominent place in Vedic literature.

According to Zed, genuine equality requires more than symbolic reforms. It demands the removal of laws, traditions, and social attitudes that treat women as secondary citizens—whether in monarchies, religious institutions, workplaces, or households.

Welcoming Liechtenstein’s decision, he expressed hope that it would inspire governments, monarchies, religious bodies, and societies around the world to take further steps toward eliminating systemic gender discrimination and ensuring equal rights for women.

“Women do not need permission to be equal; equality is their birthright,” Zed stressed, adding that gender equality must become a reality today rather than remain a promise for the future.
