Chandigarh: In a major boost to India’s self-reliance in critical healthcare technology, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, on Tuesday signed a landmark Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with Clarity Medical Pvt. Ltd., Mohali, for the indigenously developed “TrueOxy+ High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) System.”

The advanced respiratory support device has been conceived, designed and developed at PGIMER under a Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India–supported project, aimed at delivering a cost-effective, high-quality Made-in-India solution for patients suffering from acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and related conditions.

The project titled “Development of Low-Cost Indigenous High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) Device for Non-Invasive Ventilation amid COVID-19 Pandemic” was initiated in 2021 under the leadership of Prof. G.D. Puri and successfully completed in 2024. The device has since undergone rigorous laboratory testing and clinical evaluation, including Phase-1 trials in 2024 and is currently in Phase-2 clinical trials.

The TrueOxy+ HFNC system offers precise automatic control of oxygen flow up to 60 litres per minute, adjustable oxygen concentration from 21 to 100 per cent, temperature regulation between 31°C and 37°C, integrated monitoring, advanced alarm systems and robust patient-safety features—matching global standards while being tailored to Indian healthcare needs.

The ToT ceremony was chaired by Prof. Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER, who emphasised the importance of affordable and indigenous medical innovations in strengthening the country’s healthcare ecosystem. Prof. Sanjay Jain, Dean (Research), PGIMER, along with senior faculty members and research teams, were also present on the occasion.

The core development team from PGIMER’s Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care included Prof. G.D. Puri (Former Principal Investigator), Dr. Shiv Lal Soni (Current Principal Investigator), Dr. Ajay Singh, Dr. Naveen Naik B., and Er. Harpreet Singh.

Representing Clarity Medical Pvt. Ltd., CEO S.P. Rangi and Divesh Sisodia highlighted the collaborative efforts between engineers and clinicians that began during the COVID-19 pandemic and culminated in this breakthrough innovation.

Following the agreement, Clarity Medical will now lead product refinement, regulatory approvals, manufacturing scale-up and nationwide deployment of the device in close partnership with PGIMER. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce dependence on imported high-end respiratory equipment and strengthen India’s position as a global hub for affordable medical technology.

Concluding the event, Prof. G.D. Puri described the technology transfer as a milestone in advancing the national vision of “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” in the medical devices sector. Dr. Shiv Lal Soni paid special tribute to Prof. Puri for conceptualising and laying the scientific foundation of the project, noting his continued leadership as Executive Director, AIIMS Jodhpur.

HFNC devices play a vital role in intensive care units, post-operative recovery, procedural sedation, and non-invasive ventilation support. Clinical studies show that their use significantly reduces re-intubation rates, making the indigenous TrueOxy+ system a timely and impactful innovation for India’s healthcare system.
