Chandigarh/Ferozepur: Prof. Suresh Sharma, a renowned academician and researcher from the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, has been appointed as the first regular Vice-Chancellor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Ferozepur, Punjab. The appointment has been made by the Hon’ble Governor of Punjab, recognising Prof. Sharma’s outstanding contribution to higher education, research excellence, and academic leadership.
Prof. Sharma brings with him a rich national and international academic profile. He has served as Visiting Professor and Visiting Scientist at prestigious institutions including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda (USA) and the VA Medical Centre, Dallas, Texas. He is also associated with leading global academic bodies as an Advisory Board Member of the International Medical Olympiad, Greece, and the London School of Management Education, UK.
A recipient of 17 national and international awards, Prof. Sharma’s accolades include the Jacob Wolfowitz Award (USA), Best Research Award from AIIMS, New Delhi, the S. G. Gaur Award, and the Excellence in Biostatistics Award. He has also been listed among the top 2 per cent scientists worldwide in the AD Scientific Index, highlighting his global academic impact.
Prof. Sharma has played a key role in several high-impact national projects such as the National Health Profile of India and the Public Health and Pollution Control in Asia (PAPA) project, in collaboration with PGIMER, ICMR, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. His research portfolio includes more than 150 publications in reputed national and international journals and over 1,250 invited lectures delivered across India and abroad.
With representation at more than 40 international conferences in 32 countries and experience in conducting nearly 550 workshops on advanced tools such as R, SPSS, AI/ML/DS, MATLAB, AMOS, and Python, Prof. Sharma has significantly contributed to capacity building in research and data science. He has guided 20 Ph.D. and doctoral scholars in Statistics, Bioinformatics, and Medical Sciences, especially in the field of Biostatistics and healthcare research.
In addition, Prof. Sharma has served on the panel of NAAC and has been associated with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as an advisory board member, contributing to key national-level academic and selection processes. He has also held important leadership roles at Panjab University, including Chairperson of the Department of Statistics and Coordinator of the Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatics.
His appointment as Vice-Chancellor is expected to usher in a new phase of academic excellence at Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, with a strong focus on research innovation, global collaboration, quality education, and institutional growth.
