JERUSALEM — In a historic milestone for bilateral relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the “Speaker of the Knesset Medal” on Wednesday, marking the highest honor bestowed by the Israeli Parliament. The award was presented in recognition of PM Modi’s exceptional personal leadership and his pivotal role in strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Israel.
Following a rapturously received speech that earned a standing ovation from lawmakers, PM Modi was seen interacting warmly with Knesset members, many of whom gathered to take selfies and photographs with the Indian leader.
“A Tribute to Enduring Friendship” Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the ceremony, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude, emphasizing that the honor belongs to the nation rather than himself.
“I am deeply honoured to receive the Medal of the Knesset. I accept it with humility and gratitude. This honour is not a tribute to an individual, but to the enduring friendship between India and Israel. It reflects the shared values that guide our two nations.”
Deep Historical Ties During his address to the Knesset, PM Modi highlighted the profound historical and cultural connections linking the two societies, noting the great admiration in India for Israel’s resolve and achievements.
“Long before we related to each other as modern States, we were linked by ties that go back more than two thousand years,” Modi stated, referencing ancient trade records in the Talmud and the mention of India as ‘Hodu’ in the Book of Esther.
He proudly underscored India’s history as a safe haven, noting, “Jewish communities have lived in India without fear of persecution or discrimination. They have preserved their faith and participated fully in society. That record is a source of pride for us.”
Yoga, Ayurveda, and Future Exchanges Pivoting to modern cultural exchanges, the Prime Minister reflected on the growing popularity of Indian wellness practices in Israel since his first visit in 2006. With Yoga now practiced in almost every neighborhood and interest in Ayurveda surging, he extended an open invitation to young Israelis to travel to India to experience its dynamism and holistic wellness.
To further cement diplomatic ties, PM Modi also announced that the Indian Parliament has officially established a Parliamentary Friendship Group for Israel.
