CHANDIGARH: Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh today paid floral tributes to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan and former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee, marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency in India.

Describing June 26, 1975, as the darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy, the Governor highlighted that the proclamation of the Emergency resulted in an unprecedented assault on the nation’s democratic values.

During his address, the Governor reflected on the severe restrictions imposed during that period:

  • Suppression of Rights: The fundamental rights of citizens were strictly curtailed.

  • Media Censorship: The freedom of the press was heavily suppressed.

  • Political Repression: Civil liberties were restricted, and prominent opposition leaders were unjustly imprisoned.

Honoring the Defenders of Democracy

Prof. Ghosh emphasized that Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan emerged as the ultimate guiding force of the mass movement to restore democracy. He also noted that Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s unwavering commitment to democratic values and the national interest remains an enduring source of inspiration for the country.

“The nation will always remain indebted to the brave individuals who endured imprisonment, persecution, and immense hardship to safeguard democratic institutions and uphold the Constitution,” the Governor stated.

He further added that the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of countless democracy defenders during those challenging times will continue to inspire future generations.

The solemn occasion was also attended by the ADC to the Governor, Shri Dheeraj Setia, along with other senior officers and officials of the Lok Bhavan.
