Chandigarh, August 30: Chandigarh MP and former Union Minister Manish Tewari on Friday inaugurated CCTV cameras installed in Sector-29 and Kaimbwala, funded through his MP Local Area Development Scheme. The move aims to strengthen law and order in these localities.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tewari said residents of Sector-29 (Ward No. 10) and Kaimbwala (Ward No. 1) had been demanding CCTV coverage due to rising incidents of crime. Responding to their concerns, he allocated funds from his parliamentary quota for the installation.
Reiterating his commitment to the politics of development, Tewari said he has been continuously funding various development works across the city.
Taking a swipe at the Municipal Corporation, he remarked that it is “unfortunate that an institution which once met expenses from the interest earned on its fixed deposits is now celebrating a handout of ₹125 crore.” He demanded the release of a white paper on the corporation’s finances from 2014 to 2025.
He further stated that he would write to the C&AG seeking a Performance Audit of the 24×7 Mani Majra Water Supply Pilot Project, which he termed an “abysmal failure.” He alleged that ₹75 crore spent under the Smart City Mission had been squandered, calling it a “criminal waste of public money.” Tewari demanded accountability, saying that officers responsible must face action since the project has now been abandoned.
At the same time, the MP clarified that he prioritizes collective responsibility to ensure Chandigarh’s overall development.
On the occasion, Chandigarh Congress Committee President H.S. Lucky said that all major development works in the city have been carried out during Congress regimes. He added that the party believes in delivering results rather than making empty claims.
Prominent Congress leaders present included Ward No. 1 Councillor Jaswinder Kaur, former Youth Congress President Chandermukhi Sharma, ex-Mayors Ravinder Pal Singh Pali and Surinder Singh, Block Congress President Goldy, Kuldeep Singh Kaimbwala, Dr. Jagpal Singh Jagga, Rajdeep Sidhu, and Rupinder Singh Rupi.
