NEW DELHI — The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has called upon all its affiliated State and Union Territory Olympic Associations to plant 2,036 trees each. This massive green initiative is part of the nationwide Olympic Day celebrations, aiming to champion environmental sustainability through the platform of sport.
In an official communication, IOA President P.T. Usha urged the state and UT units to organize extensive tree plantation drives. These community events are expected to involve a wide cross-section of society, including local athletes, regional sports bodies, educational institutions, and youth organizations.
Aligning with Global Sustainability Goals According to the IOA, this nationwide campaign aligns seamlessly with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) ‘Olympic Forest’ initiative, which actively promotes sustainability and biodiversity through tree-planting activities worldwide.
The symbolic target of planting exactly 2,036 trees by each unit deeply represents the Olympic Movement’s long-term aspiration to build a greener, more sustainable future.
“The initiative reflects the Olympic Movement’s broader vision of building a healthier and better world through sport while promoting environmental sustainability for future generations,” the association stated.
Action Plan and Community Collaboration To ensure maximum impact and broad public engagement across the country, the IOA has encouraged state and UT associations to collaborate closely with:
-
Local sports organizations and government agencies.
-
Schools, colleges, and other educational institutions.
-
Dedicated community groups and NGOs.
These plantation activities are slated to be organized at existing sports complexes, public parks, school grounds, and other accessible public spaces.
Furthermore, the IOA has requested all affiliated units to meticulously document their respective events. By sharing detailed reports and photographs, the collective ecological effort will be prominently highlighted as a core success story of India’s Olympic Day celebrations.
