Anjaneya Tewari, Chandigarh : The Chandigarh unit of the Congress party is gearing up for a significant organizational restructuring under the All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan.
The announcement was made during a press conference at Congress Bhawan on Thursday by AICC observer Jagdish Thakor. Thakor, a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and former Member of Parliament, stated that he will conduct a seven-day consultative drive across the city to gather feedback from party leaders and workers at all levels—from the Pradesh Committee down to the grassroots.
Following these intensive deliberations, Thakor will prepare a detailed report recommending at least six potential candidates per district to the party High Command. The final names of the new district presidents will be officially announced by the High Command before the end of the month. However, Thakor clarified that high-performing existing district presidents might be retained in their positions.
Outreach to Civil Society Beyond internal party restructuring, the AICC observer extended an open invitation to local Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and other private organizations that champion constitutional values. He urged these groups to join the Congress in discussions aimed at strengthening democratic institutions within the city and across the nation.
Slamming the BJP and Municipal Corporation During the briefing, Thakor commended the Chandigarh Congress for its recent agitational programs, which he said successfully highlighted the “dictatorial and anti-democratic policies” of the Modi government and the BJP.
He also launched a scathing attack on the local administration, criticizing the rampant corruption allegedly prevailing in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation during the tenures of successive BJP Mayors.
Echoing these allegations, HS Lucky, President of the Chandigarh Congress, elaborated on the governance failures of the civic body. He criticized the work culture cultivated by BJP Mayors, alleging that the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is currently “immersed neck-deep in corruption.”
The press conference was also addressed and coordinated by Rajiv Sharma, General Secretary and Chief Spokesperson of the Chandigarh Congress.
