NEW DELHI — In a major boost to the country’s maritime logistics capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully conducted a series of in-flight release trials for the indigenous Air Droppable Container, the ‘ADC-150’.
The critical trials were executed from a Boeing P-8I Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft off the coast of Goa between February 21 and March 1, 2026.
Strengthening Deep-Sea Logistics
Entirely designed and developed in India, the ADC-150 is engineered to deliver payloads weighing up to 150 kilograms directly from the air to the ocean surface. This system is poised to revolutionize the Navy’s operational logistics, enabling the rapid and precise delivery of essential supplies—such as engineering equipment, critical spare stores, and life-saving medical assistance—to naval vessels deployed far from the coastline.
“The system will allow quick response to ships in distress or operating in deep-sea environments, where conventional supply routes may not be feasible,” stated the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
A Collaborative Indigenous Triumph
The successful qualification of the ADC-150 within a remarkably short timeframe is the result of seamless collaboration across multiple specialized agencies. The project was spearheaded by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, which served as the nodal laboratory for the entire development programme.
Key contributions from other DRDO laboratories and aviation centers included:
-
Parachute System: Developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) in Agra, ensuring the heavy container’s safe descent to the water.
-
Flight Clearance: The Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) in Bengaluru provided the rigorous flight clearance and certification required for the trials.
-
Telemetry and Instrumentation: The Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad provided precise instrumentation support to monitor the container’s deployment and descent parameters during the tests.
With the successful completion of all developmental flight trials, the MoD expects the ADC-150 system to be formally inducted into the Indian Navy’s operational fleet in the near future.
