CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig released “The Rewrite Circle,” the debut novel authored by Prof. Archana R. Singh of the School of Communication Studies, during a unique art-lit adaptation event held at the campus’s Mulk Raj Auditorium on Friday.
The launch event went beyond a traditional book release by featuring a stage adaptation of the novel’s narrative, directed by prominent city stage artist Ms. Nisha Luthra. The performance effectively brought the complex inner lives of the book’s characters into a lived reality for the audience.
Addressing a packed house of scholars and literature enthusiasts, VC Prof. Renu Vig highlighted the collaborative spirit of the event between the School of Communication Studies and the Department of English and Cultural Studies. Praising the book’s theme, she stated, “The feelings of parents towards their children do not change; there is always a longing for them when they are abroad. The book captures that very well.”
“The Rewrite Circle” uniquely weaves a series of short stories into a cohesive novel, exploring the emotional journey of five Indian women from diverse backgrounds who find themselves in the USA. The narrative serves as a bridge, addressing the “empty nest” syndrome experienced by parents while acknowledging the aspirations of youth relocating abroad.
Prof. Archana R. Singh, who has taught media studies for 27 years, explained her transition to fiction. “For 27 years, I’ve taught that journalism captures the facts, but I’ve realised only fiction can capture the truth. To those surprised that a Journalism teacher has written a novel, well, it’s the destination and not a departure from what I always do,” she shared, adding that while the story is fiction, the emotions are real.
The event was graced by philanthropist Capt. Ranjana Malik and renowned theatre personality Shri. Vijay Kapoor. Reflecting on the book’s theme, Capt. Malik noted the importance of parents accepting their children’s independence, while Mr. Kapoor engaged the audience with a poem and the poignant question: “Can we really change our endings?”
Published by The Browsers, Chandigarh, the book is now available on major online platforms. The theatrical performance featured a talented cast including Roopam Singh, Ravee Pandher, Sarika Dhupar, Sharmita Bhinder, and Abha Sharma.
