MANDI, HIMACHAL PRADESH: In a historic first for the country’s postal network, India Post successfully delivered the National Flag, the Tiranga, by drone from the Mandi Head Post Office to the remote Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh on Friday, the eve of Independence Day.
This unique initiative, which blends patriotism with public service and technological innovation, was virtually inaugurated by Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia. The minister witnessed the live drone take-off from Mandi and interacted with postal officials and the drone operator during the operation.
A Symbolic Journey
The approximately 12-kilometer mountainous stretch between Mandi and Rehardhar typically takes more than two hours to navigate through conventional transport means. The newly deployed drone, provided by Skye Air Mobility, completed the journey in a mere seven minutes.
Upon landing at the Rehardhar Branch Post Office, postal officials received the parcel carrying the Tiranga and formally handed it over to a local Army veteran, adding profound symbolic significance to the Independence Day initiative.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Scindia remarked that the Tiranga’s journey through the skies of Himachal Pradesh symbolized the spirit of a new India—one determined to overcome formidable geographical barriers and reach every citizen.
“This year’s Independence Day carries added significance as the country commemorates 150 years of Vande Mataram, bringing together national pride, the spirit of service, and the aspiration of building a Viksit Bharat,” Scindia stated.
Supporting ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’
The Union Minister emphasized that the National Flag should not only be present in every home but also in the hearts of every Indian. As part of the ongoing Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, India Post is making the flag available for delivery across the country, enabling citizens to participate actively in the national celebration from their own homes.
The successful Mandi-to-Rehardhar drone operation clearly demonstrated how emerging technologies can effectively supplement India Post’s extensive physical network and drastically improve last-mile connectivity, particularly in remote and difficult terrains.
Expanding Drone Mail Connectivity
The Department of Posts is aggressively exploring drone-based mail transmission as an innovative, long-term solution for delivering postal and public services to areas where conventional transportation is challenging, slow, or frequently disrupted by bad weather.
Under a broader rollout plan, the government intends to deploy drone-based mail services across 150 identified routes—including 110 locations in Himachal Pradesh and 40 in Assam. The initiative directly reflects India Post’s continuing focus on technological modernization and innovation, staying true to its core service ethos of “Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa.”
