GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that 17.6 percent of households in the state that have installed rooftop solar panels under the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana are now paying zero electricity bills. This milestone underscores the growing impact of the flagship renewable energy program in driving both economic savings and sustainable power generation.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister emphasized how the initiative is significantly reducing electricity expenses for thousands of households while advancing Assam’s broader transition toward clean energy.
“Seventeen-point-six per cent of Assam’s solar households have paid zero electricity bills. This is the transformation which PM Surya Ghar has brought about in Assam, which stands among the top five states in the country in implementing the scheme,” Sarma stated.
Economic and Energy Security Benefits
According to the Chief Minister, the PM Surya Ghar initiative is delivering critical advantages to residents by enabling households to generate their own electricity through rooftop solar installations.
The scheme has brought about several key transformations:
-
Cost Reduction: Beneficiaries have substantially lowered their monthly electricity expenses, with a notable proportion eliminating their power bills entirely.
Energy Independence: By generating power on-site, households are reducing their dependence on conventional, grid-supplied energy sources.
-
Statewide Adoption: The Assam government has actively promoted the adoption of rooftop solar in coordination with the Centre, ensuring eligible households can seamlessly install panels and avail themselves of available subsidies.
Officials noted that the widespread implementation of the scheme is a significant step toward supporting Assam’s long-term renewable energy objectives and expanding its clean energy footprint.
